HEALTH TESTING
Every breeding decision is made with meticulous care and extensive research. We prioritize the health and well-being of our breeding dogs, ensuring they undergo thorough health testing. Our breeding program is based on conformationally sound Chin that are free of major health defects. This commitment ensures that our puppies inherit strong genetics, giving them a better chance for a lifetime of health. The majority of health conditions prevalent in Chin are usually not seen in a growing puppy, but most are genetically passed on. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) recommends testing the parents prior to breeding to reduce the likelihood of undesirable traits being passed on to puppies. As recommended, we have been testing for GM2, eye, patella, and heart health since we began breeding in 2011. We also like Embark's unique suite of tools and services to optimize our breeding program. Their advanced DNA screening tests for 270+ genetic variants associated with inheritable disease. We find it convenient as the DNA test results are also accepted by the OFA. Embark also provides genetic coefficient of inbreeding (COI) and provides 55 coat/body traits which we find quite interesting. We have been watching the work of the Royal Kennel Club (UK) in partnership with the University of Cambridge as they have advanced research and development of a testing scheme for Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). When their Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS) became available in North America in 2025, we immediately volunteered our chin to veterinarians in training and added it to our health testing protocols. You can view and verify health testing information through the OFA health database: https://www.offa.org |
EXCELLENT TEMPERAMENTS
We are FULLY COMMITTED to each and every puppy we have. Beyond physical health, we place significant emphasis on temperament. We strive to produce puppies that are not only beautiful and conformationally correct but also possess the wonderful, gentle dispositions characteristic of Japanese Chin. Socialization and enrichment is key. Our puppies are raised in a loving home environment to ensure they are well-adjusted and ready to thrive in their new families. |
PEDIGREES
The Japanese Chin’s history reflects a journey from Chinese aristocratic origins to Japanese refinement, culminating in its status as a beloved companion worldwide. Its development emphasizes small size, elegance, and cat-like traits, and its cultural significance as a symbol of nobility and refinement remains central to its identity today. Our foundation Chin are from a variety of well-known, internationally successful kennels. Our original Chin were mostly line-bred on Danish lines, this prompted a visit to see their origin! We travelled to Denmark, met breeder Grete Hojer and her Chin (Roseheaven Kennel) and imported stunning Chin with pedigrees that go back to many internationally successful Chin breeders, including:
- Kisci Kennel (Denmark) - Ginzan Kennel (Sweden) - Sternroc Kennel (UK) - Bigarden Kennel (Denmark) - Hin Satori Kennel (Russia) - Sjunhodzo Kennel (Japan) - Of Hove Kennel (UK) - plus many more We have also had the pleasure of adding a few American lines from the Touche and Coverdale Kennels to our Chin family. Their pedigrees have beautiful Chin from: - J-Jim Kennel (USA) - Homerbrent Kennel (England) - Makami Kennel (USA) - Shomei Kennel (USA) - Sasugi Kennel (USA) - Sangria Kennel (GBR) - Ko Kuma Kennel (USA) - plus many more We can trace some of our pedigrees back to 1914 with Anderson Manor Shirataki, a male that Mrs. Gordon Gratrex imported to the UK from Japan. There are also several Of Hove Chin in our pedigrees. It is interesting to look at the type and quality in old photographs. We are honored to carry on the tradition and keep the Chin standard, quality and type true. |
